NCR WorldMark 5150 Server System Architecture

The WorldMark 4700 and the WorldMark 5150 are enterprise server systems for Scalable Data Warehouse (SDW) applications. The NCR WorldMark 4700 system is designed for data warehouses of 50 to 600 GB, with system scalability from 1 to a maximum of 8 processing nodes. The WorldMark 5150 system supports data warehouses greater than 600 GB, and offers system expansion from 2 to 128 processing nodes.

The WorldMark 4700 and WorldMark 5150 systems use industry standard rack mount architecture. They consist of individual subsystem chassis that are housed in standard rack frames. Subsystems are self contained, and their configurations -- either internal or within a system -- are redundant. The design ensures overall system reliability, enhances its serviceability, and enables time and cost efficient upgrades.

Processing rack subsystem chassis include the following:

• Symmetrical multi-processing (SMP) node
• BYNET interconnect subsystem
• Service subsystem
• Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

The WorldMark 5150 system consists of as many as 8 SMP nodes, 2 per rack.

The WorldMark 5150 system can have from 2 to 128 nodes, also 2 per rack. The SMP nodes communicate with each other through the BYNET interconnect subsystem, with BYNET chassis always paired for redundancy.

Four UPS units per rack, two for each AC power leg, support dual AC power to each WorldMark 5150 chassis within the rack.

Each rack contains a service subsystem that monitors and controls all the chassis in its rack. The service subsystem chassis is connected to each chassis within its rack through a Management Local Area Network (MLAN).

Service subsystems across multiple racks are connected over the System Local Area Network (SLAN). The SLAN interfaces all the racks with the Administration Workstation (AWS) for a single operational view of the complete system. The BYNET subsystems are also included in the SLAN for administration and control of the BYNET switching network.

In association with this system architecture, processing nodes are connected to disk storage devices in "cliques," where as many as four nodes share a disk array. The type of disk array determines how it is connected to the system platform.

• The NCR Storage Cabinet (NSC) is a rack of disk arrays that includes a service subsystem chassis to link the disk cabinet to the platform. The NSC model with a 3U service subsystem connects directly to the SLAN. The NSC with a 2U service subsystem links via an external MLAN to a controlling service subsystem in a processing rack.
  Note: The "U" is a unit of measurement for rack-mount subsystems.
• The NCR 625x array models are connected to the AWS over a Disk Local Area Network (DLAN) for single-point administration.
• The 627x models are interfaced through SCSI connection software for minimal administrative functions.

Processing nodes have a connection to the AWS over a Private Local Area Network (PLAN) for TCP/IP login capability. More WorldMark 5150 Processing Nodes info

A bus channel interface capability is available for node-to-mainframe connections in the WorldMark 5150 system.

The operating environment for the WorldMark 4700 and WorldMark 5150 systems is NCR UNIX MP-RAS version 3.02 or higher.
