NCR WorldMark 5150 Processing Node Information
Two processing nodes are resident in a standard rack configuration. In a system rack
with BYNET present, the nodes are the fourth and fifth chassis from the top of the rack,
between the BYNET and UPS chassis. Node chassis IDs are always "4" and "5,"
top and bottom respectively, whether or not the BYNET chassis ("2" and "3")
are present.
NCR WorldMark 5150 Node Component Summary
NCR WorldMark 5150 Processing Node Component Type |
NCR WorldMark 5150 Processing Node Component Description |
| Multiple processor support |
Two slots (primary and secondary) for processor boards;
four 200 MHz Pentium Pro microprocessors with integrated 512 KB write-back cache (two on each
processor board). |
| Upgradeable memory |
One slot for memory board. 4 GB memory board supports 16
DIMM devices for a minimum memory size of 512 MB up to a total of 4 GB of memory. |
| Adapter board support |
10 expansion bus slots, 6 PCI and 4 EISA (supports ISA).
PCI is dual bus architecture. Bus #0 (primary) connects the processor bus to a
PCI/EISA bridge and three PCI connectors (slots 1, 2, 3). Bus #1connects the processor bus to
two on-board fast/wide SCSI controllers and three PCI connectors (slots 4, 5, 6).
Standard adapter configuration includes:
- BYNET adapters -- 2 BPCI boards or 1 BIC2G board
with dual ports. Each cabled to separate BYNET chassis for redundancy
and high availability. Either BYNET adapter type enables BYNET
communication with all other nodes in system.
- 2 NCR PCI Quad SCSI (PQS) boards (unshared). Each on separate PCI bus for high
availability. PQS enables connection of up to 16 SCSI devices per bus, 4 buses per
board.
- 1 EISA or PCI Ethernet board. Provides LAN connection to AWS. (Only two nodes in
system require this board to create AWS LAN gateway to other nodes through BYNET
connections.)
|
| On-board SCSI controllers |
Two embedded, fast and wide PCI SCSI-2 controllers (Adaptec AIC-7880), Channels A
and B, integrated as PCI bus masters. Channel A to SCSI drive backplane for internal SCSI drives. |
| Hot swap-capable SCSI backplane with 6 bays |
The SCSI backplane has 6 hot-swap bays for 3.5-inch SCSI-2
hard drives.
The backplane supports wide and fast SCSI-2 devices that
use the industry standard 80-pin Single Connector Attach (SCA) connector.
Standard drive configuration is three 9-GB drives (max. 6
supported). For storage of operating environment and applications programs
only.
The SCSI drive backplane is configured as one SCSI bus.
The backplane automatically terminates the full 16-bit-wide bus. |
| Four removable media drive bays |
Four externally accessible 5.25-inch half-height bays are
available for diskette, CD-ROM, and/or tape drives. 3.5-inch diskette
drive is mounted in 5.25-inch carrier for insertion in any of these bays. |
| Server Management Board (SMB) with network card |
Microcontroller that handles management functions within the node,
including power control, reset, environmental monitoring, and post code reporting.Network card
provides the MLAN connection to the service subsystem.
The network card interfaces to the service subsystem
through a passthrough board. |
| Power subsystem |
Two self-contained 625-watt autoranging power supplies. Redundant,
hotpluggable, in a 1+1 configuration. Each power supply docks into a power distribution backplane
inside the node chassis. The backplane provides connections for the DC power signals
and status and control functions, such as server management features (quantity, location, and
reporting of installed and failed supplies), through I2C control. |
| Dual AC |
Two separate AC feeds, each connecting to one of the two power
supplies, accommodates dual AC input for high availability. |
| Cooling
| Pair of dual fan assemblies at front of node chassis provide cooling for
boards and drives; redundancy in case of single fan failure. Air flow is
from front to rear. |
| Video |
Integrated super VGA controller chip with 1 MB of video memory. |
| Security |
Intrusion sensor (on inside wall making contact with top
cover of node chassis) disables power to node when top cover is removed.
(Note: BIOS firmware also allows for password enable;
secure mode power-off disable.) |
Firmware and utilities (referred to as "server software") installed on the processing
node of the NCR WorldMark 5150:
NCR WorldMark 5150 Server Software Type |
NCR WorldMark 5150 Server Software Description |
| BIOS |
Flash memory-based BIOS (Basic
Input/Output System) implemented through a 512K flash device on system
board. |
| Setup Utility |
Contained within the system BIOS, always available locally and remotely. Provides
for very basic system configuration, and has support for additional features. |
| Diagnostic Partition |
Logical partition on the system hard
disk, containing essential utilities for software maintenance and system
configuration. Allows for remote execution of Diagnostics, SCU and other
repair utilities, as well as software maintenance and system configuration
tasks. |
| System Configuration Utility (SCU) |
Configures the system board hardware
and I/O adapters. Console redirection is supported via the Com 1 and Com 2
serial ports. |
NCR WorldMark 5150 component firmware and software installed on the node:
NCR WorldMark 5150 Node Component Firm/Software Type |
NCR WorldMark 5150 Node Component Firm/Software Description |
| Chassis enabling firmware |
Enables front panel logic and SCSI hot-plug backplane. Intel
microcode. |
| SMB firmware |
Controls the SMB initialization,
power-on diagnostics, firmware initialization, SMB heartbeat, and console
redirection. Also provides for monitoring and controlling of the
processing node, event handling, and configuration. |
| SMB network card firmware |
Controls the SMB network card
initialization, power-on diagnostics, firmware initialization, SMB
heartbeat, network card heartbeat, and the BCL command transport to the
SMB. Also provides for the monitoring of external UPS heartbeats, AC fail
in the processing node, event handling, and configuration. |
| BYNET driver software |
BYNET Link Manager (BLM). UNIX STREAMS device driver that manages the physical
device which connects a UNIX processor node to a BYNET. |
| BYNET adapter diagnostic software |
BYNET utility program that performs
BYNET adapter Level 0 diagnostics through a user interface. |
| BYNET Administrative Menu (BAM)
software |
BYNET utility program that determines BYNET configuration and connections from
node perspective for current installation. |
