NCR WorldMark 4900 Server: Expandable to Four Nodes
NCR WorldMark 4900 Servers are designed specifically for high-performance,
entry-level data warehousing applications ranging from 50 Gigabytes to more than
One Terabyte. Starting with a single node and incrementally expanding up to for
nodes, these systems are designed to accommodate future business growth demands,
while maintaining initial investments. When maximum capacity is reached, 4900
systems can be upgraded to WorldMark 5300 systems offering 100 times greater
capability.
NCR WorldMark 4900 System Architecture
WorldMark 4900 System Overview
The NCR WorldMark 4900/5300 product is a Massively Parallel Processing
(MPP) platform for Teradata Warehouse applications. The platform offers two
levels of scalability:
- The WorldMark 4900 system is designed for mid-range data warehouses of
100 GB to 1 Terabyte (TB), with scalability from 1 to 4 processing nodes.
The WorldMark 4900 & WorldMark 5300 system platform uses industry standard rack mount
architecture. It consists of individual subsystem chassis that are housed in standard rack
frames. Subsystems are self-contained, and their configurations - either internal or within
a system - are redundant. The design ensures overall system reliability, enhances its
serviceability, and enables time and cost efficient upgrades.
Note: The terms "platform" and "platform cabinets" refer to the WorldMark 4900 and WorldMark
5300 processing and BYNET cabinets (also referred to as "racks"). Disk storage cabinets are
supported by this platform and are discussed in relation to the platform, but are not
considered "platform cabinets."

NCR WorldMark 4900 Processing Node
Processing nodes are housed in processing cabinets, one to four Teradata nodes
per cabinet. There is also a single-node rack configuration housing one
non-Teradata node, referred to as a non-TPA (trusted parallel applications) node.
WorldMark 4900 BYNET
The nodes communicate with each other through the BYNET interconnect network.
Depending on the overall system size, the BYNET network switch may be located in
one of the processing racks in a system, or it may be housed in its own BYNET
cabinet. In either case, the BYNET switch is always paired in the system for redundancy.
WorldMark 4900 Power
Multiple UPS chassis per rack support dual (redundant) AC power sources. The
redundant power sources feed into each UPS. The UPS distributes the power to all
other chassis within the rack. All subsystem chassis are designed with multiple
power inlets.
NCR WorldMark 4900 Server Management and System Networking
Each rack contains a service subsystem that monitors and controls all the
chassis in its rack. The service subsystem chassis is connected to each chassis
within its rack through a Management Local Area Network (MLAN).
Service subsystems across multiple racks are connected over the System Local Area Network
(SLAN). The SLAN interfaces all the racks with the Administration Workstation (AWS) for a single
operational view of the complete system. The BYNET subsystems are also included in the SLAN for
administration and control of the BYNET switching network.
Processing nodes have a connection to the AWS over a Private Local Area Network (PvtLAN) for
TCP/IP login capability. NCR fibre channel disk arrays also have a PvtLAN connection.
Hub and switch hardware for the SLAN and PvtLAN is used in the system to provide for consistent
cabling protocol, from small to expansion systems.
WorldMark 4900 Disk Storage
In association with this platform architecture, processing nodes are connected
to disk storage devices in standard 4-node "cliques." The type of disk array
determines how it is connected to the system platform.
WorldMark Enterprise Storage (WES) presents disk arrays in a rack that includes a service
subsystem chassis to link the disk cabinet to the platform. The WES models are connected via
an external MLAN to a controlling service subsystem in a processing rack. Fibre channel arrays
have an additional link via the PvtLAN.
The EMC disk arrays are interfaced only through their node connections for minimal
administrative functions from the system console.
