NCR WorldMark 4850 Server: Expandable to Four Nodes
These massively parallel processing servers are designed specifically for data
warehousing applications ranging from 50GB to 1TB, and are available in a choice
of operating systems: UNIX MP-RAS, Windows 2000, or Windows NT.
WorldMark 4850 systems combine industry-leading Intel technology with proven NCR value-add
components designed to accelerate system performance and ensure constant dependability. This
combination offers the unrivaled reliability and performance that are critical for
minute-to-minute actionable business decisions.
Starting with a single node and incrementally expanding up to four nodes, these systems are
designed to accommodate the future growth of your business, while maintaining your initial
investment. When maximum capacity is reached, 4850 systems can be upgraded to WorldMark 5250
systems, offering 100 times greater capability. This unparalleled advantage provides maximum
protection of your investment.
NCR WorldMark 4850 System Architecture
About the WorldMark 4850 Platform
The NCR WorldMark 4800/5200 and 4850/5250 products are Massively Parallel
Processing (MPP) platforms for Teradata Warehouse applications. The platform
offers two levels of scalability:
- The WorldMark 4800 and 4850 series systems are designed for
data warehouses of 50 GB to 1 Terabyte (TB), with scalability from 1 to a
maximum of 4 processing nodes.
- The WorldMark 5200 and 5250 series systems can support data
warehouses from 250 GB to 100+ TB, and offers system expansion from 2 to 512
processing nodes.
The WorldMark 4800/5200 and 4850/5250 systems use industry standard rack mount architecture.
It consists of individual subsystem chassis that are housed in standard rack frames.
Subsystems are self-contained, and their configurations -- either internal or within a
system -- are redundant. The design ensures overall system reliability, enhances its
serviceability, and enables time and cost efficient upgrades.
About the WorldMark 4850 Subsystems
Following are the types of subsystems that can make up WorldMark 4800/5200 and 4850/5250
systems:
- Symmetrical multi-processing (SMP) nodes
- BYNET interconnect
- Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and UPS input selectors
- Server management
- Disk storage
NCR WorldMark 4850 Processing Node
SMP nodes are housed in processing racks, typically two Teradata nodes per rack.
There is also a minimum single-node rack configuration housing one non-Teradata
node, referred to as a non-TPA (trusted parallel applications) node.
NCR WorldMark 4850 BYNET
The nodes communicate with each other through the BYNET interconnect
network. Depending on the overall system size, the BYNET network switch may be
located in one of the processing racks in a system, or it may be housed in its
own BYNET rack. In either case, the BYNET switch is always paired in the system
for redundancy.
WorldMark 4850 Power
Multiple UPS chassis per rack support dual AC power sources. The redundant
power sources feed into UPS input selectors (UIS), one on each UPS chassis.
The input selectors choose the power source and direct it to their respective UPS
chassis. The UPS chassis then distribute the AC power to all other chassis within the rack.
All subsystem chassis are designed with multiple power inlets.
NCR WorldMark 4850 Server Management and System Networking
Each rack contains a service subsystem that monitors and controls all the
chassis in its rack. The service subsystem chassis is connected to each chassis
within its rack through a Management Local Area Network (MLAN).
Service subsystems across multiple racks are connected over the System Local Area Network (SLAN).
The SLAN interfaces all the racks with the Administration Workstation (AWS) for a single
operational view of the complete system. The BYNET subsystems are also included in the SLAN for
administration and control of the BYNET switching network. SLAN hubs are used in larger network
environments to facilitate the rack-to-rack connections.
SMP nodes have a connection to the AWS over a Private Local Area Network (PvtLAN) for TCP/IP
login capability. PvtLAN hub and switch hardware is used in the system racks to provide for
consistent cabling protocol, from small to expansion systems.
WorldMark 4850 Disk Storage
In association with this system architecture, processing nodes are connected
to disk storage devices in "cliques," where as many as four nodes share a disk
array. The type of disk array determines how it is connected to the system
platform. The NCR storage cabinet (NSC) and the WorldMark enterprise storage
(WES) present disk arrays in a rack that includes a service subsystem chassis to
link the disk cabinet to the platform. The NSC and the WES models link via an
external MLAN to a controlling service subsystem in a processing rack. The 627x
models are interfaced through SCSI connection software for minimal administrative functions.
In addition, a channel interface capability is available for node-to-mainframe connections.
WorldMark Storage is part of a highly orchestrated system designed to maximize Teradata
database operation and execute superior performance under the rigorous demands of active data
warehousing.
